In a press release, the company said that its hair growth treatment, finasteride, “offers a unique approach to combating hair loss, helping men regain confidence and self-esteem.”
Finasteride, marketed as Propecia by Merck & Co., has been on the market since 1997, and is approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating male pattern baldness.
“This drug is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for male pattern baldness,” said Merck’s Dr. Michael E. Merriam, a board-certified dermatologist. “This innovation provides a more accessible solution for men seeking to improve their appearance.”
Finasteride works by blocking a specific enzyme in the scalp, which prevents hair loss. The drug is taken orally and can be taken with or without food. The medication is available in 1 mg and 5 mg strengths. The FDA requires that the drug be taken in a controlled-release or extended-release form.
Finasteride is approved for treating male pattern baldness in men. In 1997, the FDA approved it for treating male pattern baldness in men who have or have had one or more hair loss problems. According to the agency, “The safety of finasteride for the treatment of male pattern baldness has been established through extensive and rigorous clinical trials.”
Finasteride’s effectiveness has been demonstrated in clinical trials for male pattern baldness, but only in one patient who took it for two years.
“This innovative approach provides a more accessible solution for men seeking to improve their appearance,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, a dermatologist at New York-Presbyterianzentum, who is now a co-lead in the company’s hair growth treatment.
“By providing the same hair growth benefits of finasteride, it is possible to preserve and even reverse the thinning seen in men with hereditary hair loss,” Nissen said.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.
